Presentations symposium 2023-24-11

Practitioners and academics from the Netherlands and abroad will gather at the symposium “Communication in Mental Health(care): Promoting Inclusion and Diversity” on Friday, 24 November 2023 at the University of Amsterdam. The symposium is free of charge (registration required; see below) and is an excellent opportunity for practitioners and researchers to discuss and learn how we can use communication strategies and interventions to improve access and care for vulnerable groups, such as migrants and refugees.

The event will be completely free—our commitment to ensuring accessibility to a broad audience of professionals and stakeholders. It will take place at the University of Amsterdam Roeterseiland campus in Room REC C10.20 on November 24th, 2023 from 9am to 5pm. Moreover, we understand the importance of accommodating a diverse audience. To this end, the symposium will be fully bilingual, welcoming both Dutch and English-speaking attendees. We will provide high-quality interpretation for all presentations and discussions, ensuring that language is not a barrier to accessing the invaluable knowledge shared at this event.

During this symposium, the latest findings around inclusion and diversity in mental healthcare will be presented, and we will discuss how we can use communication strategies and interventions to improve access and care for vulnerable groups, such as migrants and refugees. The event is tailored for seasoned healthcare professionals, scholars, and stakeholders. Our primary objective is to empower mental health professionals with the knowledge and strategies to deliver effective care to individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Through insightful sessions, we aim to illuminate actionable strategies for enhancing cultural competence in mental healthcare settings.

Furthermore, we are proud to showcase the groundbreaking findings of “Mental Health 4 All,” a pioneering project funded by the EU Commission, led by the University of Amsterdam. This initiative addresses the formidable barriers posed by linguistic and cultural differences in accessing mental healthcare services for refugees and migrants. Through a myriad of research and practice-oriented approaches, this project aims to reduce the negative impact of such barriers.

Participants in the symposium will have an unparalleled opportunity to glean insights and strategies directly from experts in the fields of mental health and cultural competence. Participation in this event will not only expand one’s knowledge base but will also enable active contribute to the advancement of cultural competence and mental health support in our diverse society.
