International consortium receives grant from the VolkswagenStiftung for research about multilingualism in mental healthcare

Published on March 17, 2022 – An international consortium of scientists from five countries has been awarded a grant worth EUR 1.5 million from the VolkswagenStiftung to conduct research into multilingualism in mental healthcare. ACHC member Barbara Schouten is part of the consortium. 

The aim of the research is to develop culturally-sensitive training courses to improve communication in mental healthcare with migrants who are not proficient in their providers’ language. The evaluation of the training courses will be carried out in collaboration with various partners from practice in the different countries. The consortium’s proposal involves the start of a collaboration with UMC Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany, Stellenbosch University in South Africa, Babeş-Bolyai University in Romania, University of Macau in China, and Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Five PhD students will be recruited for the research project, who will start in the autumn of 2022.
