Research: My PhD project is entitled ‘Consuming media, consuming food: the harmful effects of media use on food intake’ and investigates how and for whom media consumption influences unhealthy dietary intake and how unhealthy intake can be altered. In the first phase, an experimental study will investigate how food-related media content (e.g. food advertising) and media use purposes (e.g. informational or hedonic) activates mental goals to consume unhealthy foods and how this is affected by dietary restraint and self-control. In the second phase, an intervention will be developed that aims to reduce impulsive dietary intake (as a consequence of media exposure) in a relevant target group of dieters.
