Name: Edith G. Smit

Interests: Edith is director of the Graduate School of Communication, running three accredited Master’s programmes and one PhD training programme, and full professor of Persuasive Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam. She has been actively involved with the Erasmus Mundus Journalism programme, the European Advertising Academy, the DDMA Privacy Authority, and SWOCC for many years. She has a proven track record of publishing in leading journals (e.g., Computers in Human Behavior, Medical Internet Research, International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Health Communication, Journal of Media Psychology), receiving some awards and grants (e.g., MSI, AAA, NWO, SWOCC, Shell), reviewing for different journals, serving at NWO, FWO and dissertation committees, supervising PhD candidates, and teaching.
Research: We do research into the effectiveness of (hidden) persuasion tactics and examine to what extent people are able to make informed decisions when confronted with these tactics. Our research aims are to disentangle persuasion and resistance mechanisms, to inform users about strategies, and to develop tools to empower (vulnerable) consumers.
