Research: My main research interests are in health behavior and health education, with a special interest in behavioral nutrition and physical activity. My research has covered the scope from studies on the individual and contextual determinants of nutrition and physical activity behaviors, small-scale experimentation with innovative ICT supported health education interventions, and larger-scale field experiments in which the efficacy and external validity of health behavior promoting interventions are tested. Further interests: I have been a member of the grant panels of the World Cancer Research Fund, the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development’s prevention program, and (as vice chair) healthful nutrition program, and the Netherlands Heart Foundation’s epidemiology and prevention program. I am a past president and an honorary fellow of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity and member of the Netherlands Health Council and chair of its Nutrition Committee. I am the editor of the Dutch handbook on health education and health promotion, and have served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Journal of Health Promotion. I am or have been coordinator of three European Commission framework program projects on behavioral nutrition and physical activity am the elected coordinator of DEDIPAC (DEterminants of DIet and Physical ACtivity), the first joint action in the European Joint Programming Initiative ‘A Healthy Diet for A health Life’, to harmonize and progress research into determinants of diet and physical activity across Europe.
